An Arrest Has Been Made In This Baby Battery Case Thanks To Social Media Outrage
An Oregon couple dared to go on a date night, leaving their one-year-old son in what they thought were the capable hands of their babysitter.
Instead, when they got home, they heard their child screaming while their babysitter, Markell Deon Hilaire, slept on the couch. The next morning, in the light of day, they saw that their little boy, Jacob, was covered in bruises.
Hilaire admitted to abusing Jacob two months ago, but he initially couldn't be prosecuted due to a ruling in Oregon that states the victim has to be able to definitively prove that the mistreatment was intentional, which is difficult to do when the victim is a baby who can't speak.
In a viral Facebook post that ignited public outrage, Jacob's dad, Joshua Marbury, wrote, "Something needs to be done. NOBODY can just hit a child and more to just get away with it because the child can't verbally tell you." Thanks to the powers of social media, Marbury's call to action was answered.
Hilaire, 27, was arrested on charges of criminal mistreatment and assault this week after he turned himself over to the police, according to a press release from Sherwood P.D. His bail was set for ,000, and has reportedly been paid.
While champions of the #justiceforjacob campaign may consider this a small victory, many are displeased that Hilaire was released from jail.
While others understand that the even bigger issue at stake is that Oregon's state law fails to protect victims who can't speak out for themselves.
"At this point our case is in the hands of the justice system," Jacob's mom, Alicia Quinney, wrote on her Facebook page. "Thank you all for your support and continued support as this case moves forward.
