How to Prevent a Dog from Door Charging
Does your dog charge the door when you are going out? Does he/she try to be the first one out on walks? If so you can fix this problem with a little time and patience. Our goal here is to teach the dog that when it is sitting calmly the door opens. When it is charging the door, the door closes. The dog is fully in charge of the doors opening and closing by his/her actions.
Leash your dog and ask the dog to sit beside you at the door.Allow enough room for you to open the door without forcing your dog to move. This is very important.
Slowly open the door.Your dog will likely get up and try to charge through it. When this happens quickly shut the door and wait till the dog sits down. It is best to ignore your dog at this time. If the dog takes too long to sit you can gently encourage the dog to sit the first few times.
Repeat the last step once the dog is again sitting beside you.Slowly open the door. If the dog raises from the sit again close the door quickly.
Continue to repeat the opening/closing exercise till the dog figures out that the door only opens when the bum is on the ground.
QuestionMy dog is a seven year old male German Shepherd and he is quite well trained when it comes to sit and stay and basic commands. My problem is, he squeezes through narrow spaces to get past you and he has even knocked people over, what can I do?Imogen OwoladeCommunity AnswerYour dog probably is having a minor dominance issue. To combat this, you must ensure that you always enter any rooms first and he must wait for your permission to enter. Thanks!
- Do not punish the dog for charging or praise him for sitting. Let the dog figure out what is causing the door to open. It may take longer this way but the lesson will be more firmly implanted in the dogs mind since it was the dog that reasoned it out.
- If possible work with a dog that is a little more tired or calm. You may not always be able to do this but do so when possible.
